Mike Singh asked:

Ski clubs, organizations, and resorts all have one common interest – the enjoyment of snowsport activities, which involves skiing, snowboarding, cross country, and telemark skiing. Not all ski resorts have a ski club associated with it, but for those who do, year-around-activities are provided which can include ski instruction, racing programs, social activities, and inter-club trips. While skiing is what brings these groups together in the first place, it is not necessarily what keeps them together. As stated, their love of skiing and winter sports – with common interests and feeling of community – keeps them skiing together for years and years, many times forming long friendships. People who ski should join a ski club, regardless of the level of ski expertise. Beginners are almost always welcome, and this is a great way for beginners to quickly improve their skills and techniques out on the slopes.

Ski clubs are better served through federal involvement, promoting improved communication, education and benefits, and influencing issues relevant to snowsport and ski clubs. Ski club members meet with ski industry representatives, working together to develop resources for not only members, but also for the affiliated ski resort. One of the 2005 brainstorms was involving the recruitment of new members into ski clubs. Some ideas brought up were: bring in members that have talents the club can use, such as tech support or web designing; involve college or university ski clubs; bring a friend to the club, allow them to learn about skiing and the equipment; or combine a club/council and college ski trip. In order to reach new demographics, promoting families and family trips were brought up.

Ski clubs are an exceptional way to learn some new things about skiing or snowboarding. Going on ski vacations with other ski club members at discounted rates, is occasionally offered on ski vacation packages involving ski resorts, ski areas, various mountains, and various countries. No matter where you live, there is a ski club near you. This is true even if you live in a place that does not ever get snowfall due to man made snow! Some are local clubs, meaning that the slopes that they ski on are within driving distance for the day, while others are more national or global, which means that if possible, they not only ski locally but they also plan ski trips. Arrangements are usually made through the club, so that everyone is eligible for the discounts. The money that is required from each member for the trip is usually paid to the club, and the club passes the funds onto pay for lodging, airfare, meals, lift tickets, and other perks that are included in the trip. Because arrangements are being made for a group of people – which is usually fairly large – discounts are given. This benefits all members of the club.

Jason Lewis asked:

Pioneer Sondre Norheim, from Telemark, has often been called the father of modern skiing for inventing the equipment and techniques that led to modern skiing as we see it today. However, originally skis were used as a practical item, used primarily for travel in a climate that received an abundance of snow.

The first hints to the existence of skis are on Cave and rock drawings discovered in 1933 in Norway which depict a man on skis holding a stick. During this time, however, skiing was not used as a sport but for survival. The oldest skis were found in Norway, where it’s believed that the first skiers tied bones of large animals to their boots with leather straps.  Short skis were found in Sweden, believed to be the oldest skis, which date back to 4500 years old.

As time progressed, people in the Telemark area in Norway began to develop skiing as a finer art.  In the early 1700’s, these people began to use skis to make downhill descents, and they were fond of making jumps.  This was the beginning of skiing as we know it today.  The jumps and downhill descents became known as the Nordic style.

The development of modern skiing as we know it was making strides in 1850 Sondre Norheim.  He created skis by typing twisted wet birch roots to his boots, and waited until the roots dried.  These bindings allowed for better control than the old leather straps, and now it was possible to make new turning motions.  Soon afterwards, in 1896, and Austrian named Mathias Zdarsky from Austria demonstrated the skill of pushing one ski at an angle to control speed.  Another Austrian, Hannes Schneider, continued to refine these skills in the early 1900s and started the first formal Method of Ski Instruction (frequently known as the Arlberg technique).  Because of the new developments, and the change in style, this new form of skiing became known as Alpine Skiing.

Around this time, skiing was changing into a competitive sport. The first known civilian ski race took place in Tromso, Norway in 1843. Also in 1888, the Norwegian Fridtjof Nansen made the first crossing of Greenland, travelling from East to West on skis. The report on his expedition, was published in 1890 in both Norwegian and English, and later in German. It aroused great interest in skiing in Europe and the United States, as well as creating a Norwegian national hero. From then on skiing was regularly in the news, and was soon adopted as a pastime and a sport by the wealthier classes of Europe,

In 1921, the first slalom race was held in Switzerland, and Alpine Skiing events were added to the Winter Olympics in 1936.  During this time, skiing was becoming a popular pastime activity in Europe.  Around this time, a ski lift was invented, which contributed to the popularity.  Ski resorts were opened after World War II in Austria and Switzerland.

Skiing has continued to grow in popularity and is very much a popular activity for kids with skiwear brands developing ranges of children’s ski clothing to meet demand.  In less than one hundred years, there are choices of popular ski resorts world-wide.  Different schools of thought about different methods exist, but meanwhile ski manufacturers are refining their products for the ever-evolving sport, making it faster, safer, and more navigable to race down the hills.  You can find a wealth of information on skiing, and it has turned into such a popular sport that you can watch it on TV for the competitions from people around the world. Skiing should continue to grow in popularity as travel becomes more possible for the masses, and it is fast becoming a more accessible sport for the middle class.

Unique Ski Travel Advice

Filed Under skiing | Comments Off

Clint Jhonson asked:

Ski travel sounds wonderful but  it can be frightening for those who are not in good shape or for those who are not aware of the risks they take when they ski down a slope without having taken ski advice. Ski travel advice is also necessary from the financial point of view as you must consider the price of your equipment, which includes skis, ski boots, ski poles, bindings, goggles and a weatherproof outfit.

Duplicate the changes here:Content: Ski travel sounds wonderful. However, it may sound dangerous for those who do not have a proper physical training or for those who are not aware of the risks taken when they go down the ski slope without previous ski advice. Ski travel advice is also necessary from the financial point of view as well. You must consider the price of your equipment, which includes ski boots, ski sticks, straps, glasses, and costume.

Ski equipment can be very expensive. Thus, if you are a beginner our ski advice would be to rent equipment or purchase good second hand skis and ski boots. They are of course cheaper and can be good enough for learning to ski. If you decide to purchase second hand equipment, you should go with an expert in the field  to make sure the equipment is in good condition and suitable for a beginnerl. After you have made progress, you can purchase better quality skis adapted to your favourite skiing style.

It is important to pay attention to ski travel advice related to your knees, which are one of the most exposed and vulnerable parts of your body when skiing. Ski advice is necessary because a beginner skier should have the physical fitness necessary to help with balance, reaction time, the ability to learn, attention span, the capacity to judge distances correctly, and self confidence..

Before going on holiday in the winter, our ski travel advice would be to take as much physical training as possible in order to help avoid injuries on the ski slopes, especially if you are not used to exercising for the rest of the year. At the beginning of the ski season, it is recommended to take up exercises that tone the muscles of the legs to avoid stiffness because they are given a real workout while skiing.

Cycling (in a gym or in the open) is the ideal training for a ski holiday. It is also good to learn some warm-up exercises like arm rotations, stretching and twisting the body, lunges, etc. Ski advice can help you to avoid common injuries. When skiing, a skier has their knees slightly bent and joints can be vulnerable in this position, especially when rotation movements exert considerable stress onto ligaments.

Having toned muscles can help you to stay in control when skiing.ligament and that is why it is important for a skier to have highly developed muscles around the knee. Otherwise, the risk of accidents can be high. The most frequent skiing traumas are associated with the knees: contusions, sprains, dislocations, ruptured ligaments, and ruptured meniscus. Other ski related accidents are fractures, and traumas to the face or head. Arms can be exposed to accidents also if the skier happens to fall.

An important factor related to ski travel advice is correct use of the equipment. For example, binding must be correctly adjusted. The ski boots and the bindings must release when needed, so that the knee is not damaged. Many knee sprains can be avoided if bindings are correctly adjusted so that they release properly.

My wife and I are in the Sacramento area in early February and want to drive a couple of hours to go skiing for a day/evening. I’ve been once before, 20 years ago, while my wife has never been. We’re looking for somewhere cheap, but not dirty and crappy, if you know what I mean. Any suggestions? The first two places I’ve found are Boreal and Squaw Valley. Thanks.

Meribel is in the heart of the Three Valleys skiing area in the French Alps. It’s Europe’s favourite skiing destination with stunning scenery and excellent snow conditions for a wonderful ski holiday. Travel to the ski slopes is now very convenient with budget airlines and trains offering their services from UK to the ski destinations in France.

But travelling with all your bulky winter clothes, accessories and the heavy, large bags of your ski equipment is not an easy thing. At the same time, buying ski equipment is not an option if you are only going for a season.

Also, ski gear is expensive and requires maintenance and care to keep it in top condition. With the constant upgrades and latest models available in skis, your gear can quickly become outdated. Another issue is that your ski gear needs to match the snow conditions at the ski resort. With your own equipment, you are stuck with equipment that’s not quite suited to the snow conditions at Meribel.

For all these reasons, many skiers prefer ski hire at Meribel. The advantages are many: its convenient- lighter and hassel free travel, cheaper than buying your own ski equipment. You are also assured that you will get ski gear that’s in excellent condition and just suited to the snow conditions and for your skiing level. The ski hire services at Meribel cater to all levels of skiers from beginners to advanced skiiers. Hiring ski equipment may also be a good idea for young children. They’ll outgrow their boots, if not their skis, in a season, sometimes quicker.

Here are tips on ways to save money when skiing, including purchasing equipment inexpensively in Meribel.

Start your search well before you plan to go on your ski holiday. The best place to start your search is the internet. There are many ski hire websites which offer their services for hiring skis and skiing equipment in the Meribel resort. You will find several cheap ski hire packages to match your requirements and your budget.

When you hire ski in time equipment online, you will have a range of options to choose ski equipment for your family or group based on their personal requirements.

Give all your details accurately: your height, weight, and ability level are the most important things that you will be asked while hiring ski equipment online. This information is important to get you the right equipment and also for setting the release weight (DIN setting) on your bindings.

Insurance recommended: Many shops will offer optional ‘insurance’ on top of normal rental. This will typically cover all of the costs should you lose your skis, damage them or have them stolen. Its important given the risk of unpredictable snow and weather conditions on the pistes.

Are discounted lift tickets available when you book your ski rental? If so, check out all the options (multi-day tickets, mid-week tickets, etc.) to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

These are some of the important things to bear in mind while hiring skis and ski equipment at Meribel. You can visit (website URL) for details, information and discount offers for ski hire at Meribel.
