Skiing in Scotland

Jasmine Stone asked:
Scotland may be the home of golf, but it’s also a great place for skiing enthusiasts. With numerous world class resorts, and such a depth of history and culture, Scotland is a great place to visit on your vacation, regardless of your interests and hobbies. When you think of Scotland, you might think of kilts, and rural mountaintops and sheep, but if you actually get to know the place, you’ll find it is both beautiful, with its bustling, classy cities, ensuring you’re going to have an enjoyable vacation wherever you go in the country.
One of the most famous Scottish ski resorts is Aviemore. A classy, traditional ski resort, Aviemore is located within the Scottish Highlands, and is the ski resort of choice for many across the world. Loved for its friendly atmosphere and great skiing, Aviemore is more than well equipped to give you a great time. It’s bars and restaurants are simply first class, offering wholesome food and drink to keep you well refreshed. Additionally, it’s holiday village feeling enhances its friendly, relaxed ambience, and makes you feel a million miles from home whilst still comfortable.
Alternatively, there are some more ski resorts in the Scottish Highlands which are particularly good value for money. It is important to watch out, though, given that some resorts cater for the top end of the market, and you could end up paying a lot more than you bargained for. As long as you do your homework before you leave, you should fin the resort that is perfect to cater for your needs, and your wallet.
One thing to watch out for before you arrive in Scotland is to change your currency into Sterling Pounds. Your best option is to go to your local travel agents, or your local currency conversion centre before setting off. That way, you will be sure of exactly what you are getting for your money. It is a good idea to be wary of the commission, and the exchange rate you are being offered, and it can sometimes be quite tricky to get your head around the numbers. Make sure you work everything out before hand, and shop around so that you don’t get wripped off.
For excellent deals on Scotland, why not go online? Additionally, there you will find a great deal of information on what to do in Scotland, and information on the depth and variety of Ski Resorts. If you choose not to go to a ski resort, but rather a city, and you want to cram in some top quality, affordable skiing during your trip, you are also in luck. There are loads of dry ski slopes in and around the cities, like at Polmont for example, which is located midway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, which is ideal for some quick and cheap skiing. Additionally, there are several indoor artificial snow ski slopes which you can visit. These innovative inventions are used to help train national level skiers, and are also open to the public at certain times, so why not pop along during your visit?
Why not consider Scotland? With so many excellent deals on skiing package tours at the moment, you’ll definitely be glad you did, and you are guaranteed to have an enjoyable, fun holiday in this picturesque, ski-enthusiast’s heaven.

Family Ski Trip: 5 Tips to Save You Money
Filed Under skiing | Comments Off
Frank McGoldrick asked:
My family loves to ski but the weekend ski trip has gotten extremely expensive. Taking a day trip to go skiing can cost a family of four over $300 (lift tickets, food & equipment rental). Here are five tips to help save you money on your next ski trip:
1) Find a local ski club in your area. Local ski clubs often offer discounted packages on ski trips they organize. They work with local resorts to get cheaper lift tickets and lodging. Just do a website search for clubs in your area.
2) Contact your county or township government office to see they offer any discounted lift tickets to local ski resorts. Often local government offices provide discounted lift tickets as a service to their residents.
3) Pack your lunch/snacks/drinks before you go to the ski resort. This is pretty simple, but we often forget this step. A family of four will spend $40 to $50 on food and drink alone if they eat at the ski resort. Why pay $8.00 for sandwich and $2.00 for a soda when you can stop at a supermarket on the way to the resort. You’ll save money and you can bring home any food/drink that you didn’t use.
4) Ski at off peak times. Often it is cheaper to ski during the week or during evening hours (if available). Take a day off during the week and get cheaper lift ticket prices (it’s less crowded, too).
5) Shop online to buy new skis, snowboards or gear. Go to your local ski store to get fitted for your skis, ski boots, snowboard and gear. Then go online to shop for the best deal. There are plenty of online ski and snowboard retailers out there. One of my favorite websites is SkiHeart.com. They search online ski and snowboard websites for sales on skis, snowboards, ski jackets and gear. They then post all the sales and deals on their website. For example, if you were looking for a ski sale, you could go to their website and find multiple deals on ski brands and styles. This is a great website to help you to comparison shop.
I hope this article helps to save you some money. See you on the slopes!

Seniors Can Enjoy Skiing Too
Filed Under skiing | Comments Off
Daniel Millions asked:
Skiing is not just a sport for young people; many seniors are enjoying skiing as a way to keep healthy and have fun. With the help of skiing, a senior can remain agile and mentally sharp as they age. Nearly three out of every American skier is a senior. As the population ages, it is expected that this number will continue to grow.
When a skier enjoys skiing and has incorporated skiing into their lifestyle, it can be hard to let the sport go as the skier ages. Although, many seniors desire to keep skiing in their lifestyle, the cost of the sport can become unaffordable after many years. Many seniors cannot pay the high price of equipment maintenance and of using ski services at the slopes year after year.
If the senior remains fit otherwise, it can be frustrating not to be able to ski due to financial reasons. With some research, interested seniors can find and participate in skiing clubs and communities that cater to their segment of society. Senior skiing organizations usually have a discount or method of saving money for participants. Many ski operators are willing to give seniors a break at the cash register too.
When seniors ski, they remain socially active, which is a great bonus in addition to the physical health benefits. The skiing senior can always enjoy this winter sport with family and friends. Seniors can find new friendships and renew old ties when they are involved in the skiing culture. Skiing has many benefits for all participants.
Before beginning any exercise program, a person should consult their doctor and follow the doctor’s advice. Skiing is a physically demanding sport and is not for all seniors.
Skiing is considered a lifestyle choice and requires time and effort to remain fit enough to remain active in the sport. It is necessary for skiers to continue an exercise program throughout the year to keep a strong cardio vascular system. Walking is a good way to keep the entire body fit. The skier should prepare for the season by training with weights that target specific and all muscle groups.
The senior should choose easier ski courses as a precaution against slow movement during a crucial moment. As a person ages, they lose flexibility and endurance so it is important not to tax the body while skiing. Even a fit senior’s cardiovascular system must be prepared for the skiing season. A senior skier’s purpose for skiing should be to have a good time while keeping fit. That the senior can ski is fantastic fact in itself so it is not necessary for the senior skier to take any unnecessary chances.
Equipment is an important component of skiing. Without the right equipment, a senior skier could be injured or unable to ski properly. Not only must equipment must be fitted properly, it must be maintained and replaced as necessary. The senior skier should have good equipment that is fitted by a person with the expertise to do a good job. Proper equipment will help keep the senior safe on the slopes.

Best Travel Plans Begin With Ski Horizon

Sean Tan asked:
The most mention of the word skiing conjures up a sense of unbeatable excitement for the adventure sports lovers among us. Skiing is undoubtedly the best kind of holiday for someone who loves sporting. But if the word skiing is spoken in the same sentence with Alps, then there is no limit to the cheerfulness such a vacation could cause.
Ski Horizon, the sister concern of the very popular Travel Horizon provides just that. This travel service specializes in arranging skiing vacations for most locations in the Alps, spread over France and Germany and also other hotspot skiing destinations in Italy and Austria. There are more than 200 destinations on the catalog of Ski Horizon, and these destinations are all situated in some of the most happening skiing destinations in the European ranges such as Beaufortin, Brian?onnais, Thermes, Mercantour and Tarantaise, all in France, where highly discounted vacations are available even in the peak seasons.
Ski vacations are famous throughout the year, but their popularity increases manifold in the summer months. During this time, the European mountains are still covered with powdered snow, which is best for skiing. Thousands of people arrive each day in each of these locations, and the people coming through Ski Horizon form a sizable chunk of that population.
For those of you who don’t know skiing, or are just starting out with the sport, there are facilities whereby you can take skiing lessons from expert instructors situated at the resorts where you will be living in. There is no requirement for you to tug along your ski gear even; with Ski Horizon, you can book that in advance from your point of accommodation. So, when you reach the place you will be living in, your skiing gear will also be waiting for you. This makes it very convenient for someone who is not sure about whether they will be skiing at all. There is no apprehension whether or not to lug the heavy ski gear; even if you don’t know skiing at all, there are options for you to begin learning!
Accommodation is a very important part of some holiday, and Ski Horizon recognizes that need. People booking with Ski Horizon can live in hotels, chalets or villa type residences. The determining factor would be the budget, but with the discounts on offer here, even a seemingly expensive vacation could become much affordable.
The website does insist their customers to carry their ski passes and ski insurances. However with the immense safety precautions around the destinations, and the training instructors, there is a very less chance of having an accident. One can safely visit these places and have one’s time of the life with a ski holiday.

Ski Holidays Look Cool For 2008
Filed Under skiing | Comments Off
Roger Munns asked:
Many naysayers are predicting a slow ski season simply because of global warming and increasing fuel costs.
The 2006-2007 British ski market saw a three per cent increase despite challenging snow conditions and fuel prices. Three per cent may not sound like a large number, but the numbers are astounding. The 2005-2006 ski season saw approximately 921,000 Brits take a ski holiday. The total of skiers rose in the 2006-2007 season to 1.19 million.
Let’s face it; we, as human beings, love to pamper ourselves from time to time with a holiday. Die-hard skiers are not going to let the possibility of poor snowfall or fuel prices stand in their way of a ski holiday. They know their favourite resorts will have things taken care of. On the other hand, people who have been dreaming of a ski holiday for years aren’t going to let poor conditions stop them either. People, in general, will do what they want, no matter what the conditions.
Crystal Ski Holidays knows this to be true. They aren’t worried about losing business. They know how to take care of their customers. They see a lot of repeat visitors year after year. The 2006-2007 ski-season suffered from low snowfall and high fuel costs. High-elevation resorts, like several of Crystal’s resorts, had no problems with low snowfall.
France continues to be the most popular ski holiday getaway with just over 37% of UK skiers enjoying chalet and club hotel holidays. Two contributing factors also aided France’s popularity in the 2006-2007 ski season: the first being a difficult start to the season because of a late-starting winter yielding low snowfall to start; the second factor being a late Easter. Many skiers enjoy taking a lengthy ski holiday during Easter break. France is home to some of the higher-altitude ski resorts, so they have more snow earlier and later in the season. Some predict similar challenges for the 2007-2008 ski season.
Crystal Holidays is prepared to face these challenges head-on by helping in the fight against global warming. During the 2006-2007 ski season, Crystal Ski Holidays was the first major operator to offer their customers the opportunity to participate in a programme to offset the carbon emissions created by their flights. Crystal has signed on to the “carbon neutral” scheme with The CarbonNeutral Company.
CarbonNeutral makes investments globally in projects like solar, hydro and wind farms in a massive effort to cut back on greenhouse gases. Many of Crystal’s customers are more than happy to join in with donations and support for the cause.
Many of the greatest ski destinations are jump-starting their ski conditions by making their own snow early in the season. This will give natural snow a great blanket to stick to. Some of the higher elevation areas are already seeing a nice amount of natural snowfall in countries like Austria and Andorra. Resorts in these areas are generally booked months in advance and don’t let things like negative predictions hold them back from having a great ski season.
No worries, ski enthusiasts! Your favourite ski destinations will welcome you with man-made snow this season if natural snow is slow. The bigger ski resorts have invested in several snow cannons over the years. Several of these snow cannons are working overtime until nature catches up. They have also build reservoirs to aid in snow production during slow-snowfall months.
The 2007/8 European ski season looks set to be one of the best yet!

Austria Prepares For 2008/9 Ski Season
Filed Under skiing | Comments Off
Roger Munns asked:
Austria’s Innsbruck is one of the best known European ski resorts, with absolutely first class facilities for both experienced and novice skiiers alike.
And Innsbruck isn’t resting on her laurels after a terrific 2007/8 season which saw the return of snow after a disastrous year the year before which triggered panic in many ski areas that global warming had arrived with a vengeance - Innsbruck has invested over 50 million Euros in new ski holiday facilities, with a contribution from the Austria government, and is providing a new cable car that will take skiiers direct to the skiing at a breathtaking 7000 feet from the city centre.
In an effort to blend the new infrastructure in with the environment, the stations en route to the ski areas have been designed cleverly to look like natural ice formations.
With many European ski countries seeing a dip in visitor numbers last year for the first time in a decade, many invested in both on and off mountain facilities to try and tempt past and new visitors to take a ski holiday this year, and it paid off.
Ski holiday tourists were up for the 2007/8 season as snow fell heavily and regularly right through to the end of the skiing holidays season in both European and North American ski resorts, and low cost airlines are putting on extra flights for the 2008/9 season.
Several airlines recently announced a plan to encourage more trips to ski resorts by opening up additional routes for travel. These fly passengers directly to the airports that are closest to several of the major skiing destinations for many individuals and families on holiday. For example, Britain’s leading low cost airline flies passengers on holiday into Barcelona, which is the nearest airport to Andorra’s ski holiday resorts.
In addition to the flights taking passengers to ski at Andorra, there are several more flights connecting skiiers to their favourite holiday areas. Flights from London, Glasgow, Bristol, Liverpool, Blackpool and Newcastle to ski areas could see more people taking a ski holiday next year.
The reason airlines have chosen to increase the number of direct routes they provide to ski resorts for the 2008-9 winter holiday period is due to the fact business is booming. As of the end of October, one alone had over 2.5 million bookings for individuals and families wanting their flying services to travel to skiing destinations in Europe during this winter just gone.
Increasing the number of direct routes of these low costs airlines allows even more individuals to book flights for their holiday plans.
Innsbruck is set to gain as much as any ski area as just started are low cost flights six days a week from London’s Gatwick Airport to Innsbruck. This weekly schedule will accommodate Britons who want inexpensive travel to a locale that lives and breathes skiing.
Innsbruck is located in the federal state of Tyrol. Located in the Inn Valley between high mountains, it is ideally suited to winter activities and skiing in particular. The name Innsbruck means “the bridge over the Inn”. And with its new facility Innsbruck has the best of both the old and modern for anyone thinking of skiing holidays for next winter.
