You can’t beat a nice hot summer’s day with the spray in your face and a fast boat beneath your feet - unless it’s a fast pair of skis under your feet! Water skiing has been around for over 80 years now since Ralph Samuelson of Minnesota first tried a pair of snow skis and a rope attached to a boat.

To ski on water you not only need the right kind of skis, but also the right kind of boat. A good ski boat should have small wake and have nippy maneuverability and turning capability, and in this case biggest is not best. The best skiboats have inboard engines although it is not cast in stone, and while many people ski using general purpose deck ski boats, the best are purpose built.

Australia has a variety of ski boats for sale since there are so many of them and quite frankly they tend to all be great boats. It would be easier to single out those slightly less fabulous than the rest than to pick the best, and you can’t go by price. Bayliner is another boat builder with very popular skiboats in the 16 - 22 foot range The Bowrider 205 is typical of a great skiboat with a 220 hp Mercuiser engine. This ski boat comes with storage area in the floor for skisand great sound system from its stereo controller that allows you fit a a number of different sound systems. Building boats for over 40years Bayliner has the experience to know how to build good boats. These boats are quality, and respond to the helm perfectly.  With rapid acceleration, they can also turn on a cent piece, and are perfect for skiing.

Crownline boats are for the boating enthusist that likes a bit more power.  These boats exude class and quality, and the Bowrider 240LS is great for skiing. You can choose your colour and your Mercedes engine up to a maximum 425 horse power.  Add to that an optional fantastic Social Swim Transom® entertainment system, and a head with sink and shower, and this baby is great for all day fun.  If you prefer a deckboat to a bowrider for your skiing, then the Crownline 252 EX has similar appointments with similar outboard engine, and a Sony Marine sound system as normal. Crownline may be a little more expensive but you pay for quality and one of the best ski boats for sale.  Once more, though, they are multi-purpose and while very popular with the mid range ski boat skier they are not specialist ski boats.

For a championship specialist ski boat, then Skicraft might be the one you are looking for.  Skicraft, based in Bayswater, have been manufacture championship skiboats since 1969, offering very reliable turning and maneuverability, but is also very safe. From the smooth and steady 202 to the new V-Drive eXV Skicraft are true competition boats.  The ExV is an updated model of the popular eX2, with a good weight design allowing you to switch from wakeboarding to skiing with a turn of a switch.

Skicraft commonly build specialist boats, and the V-Drive is generally better for wakeboarding. However, wakeboarding boats for sale can be pricey because they have to be heavier to produce a good wake. With there own developed wake control technology, with Skicraft you can alter the size of the wake to swop between skiing and wakeboarding, and all at a price well below that of a purpose-built wakeboarding boat.

However, the boat that everybody is waiting to see is the new Mustang. Since being taken over by new owners, Mustang is back, and is going from strength to strength. Their most recent boat, still to be unveiled, is the Mustang 2008 430 Sports Coupe.  How good this will be for ski boat we don’t know, but it is equipped with Volvo IPS 600 engines as standard, with 418 HP each so is going to be prompt enough.

These are among the more popular skiboat ranges around Australia, but there are many more and it would take several pages to do justice to even a fraction of them.

If you will be traveling for a ski vacation, it is often difficult to know what to pack. You may not even have a problem knowing what to pack, but instead have a problem figuring how to get everything that you need from your home to your destination. Skis do not easily fit into suitcases, and if you are flying, this presents a huge problem.

Start by knowing what is available at your destination. Is there a rental shop? How much are the rental fees for skis, boots, and poles. If it is reasonable, and you don’t mind skiing with rented equipment, this is a viable option - and it makes packing and traveling much easier.

If you don’t care for rented equipment, there is another option. Find out if there are any ski shops in the area. There usually are. Get prices on skis, poles, and boots, and then ask if they buy used equipment. If they don’t, ask if there is anyone near by that does purchase used equipment. Call that place to get an estimate on how much you could get for barely used ski equipment. Figure the difference in the money you will spend on the ski equipment, and the money you will get for the used equipment when you are finished with it. If it isn’t much more than what it would cost you to rent the equipment, go for it!

Ski suits, ski jackets, and sweaters can be very bulky, and hard to pack. These items will take up a lot of room in your suitcase, and leave less room for other clothing and essentials. If you are trying to pack for a two week ski vacation, it will be impossible to fit everything you need into one suitcase.

There is a way to solve this. Call the lodge or resort where you will be staying. Tell them that you need to ship a package, for yourself, to them, and that you need that package to be there when you arrive. Ask them if they will hold it for you at the desk. In most cases, they will. Next, get a box, put all of your ski suits, your ski jacket, and any other bulky items in the box, and ship it to yourself, in care of the lodge or resort. Shipping can be overnight, two day, or three day depending on how far it must travel. Depending on how much the box weighs, you will usually pay less than fifty dollars to ship a package in the continental United States….which is a lot less than you would pay an airline for extra baggage!

When skiing in France, you’d be mad not to go to the alps.  Famous the world over for their excellent ski slopes, the alps also border on Switzerland, so you might also like to pop over and visit while you’re in town.  And don’t worry if you don’t have your equipment - there are simply thousands of dedicated ski shops to serve the tourists, and some stock some pretty good bargains!

Why not look online for great French skiing deals?  Thanks to the internet, holiday prices have really come down over the last few years, and you can find some real bargains with a bit of research.  Additionally, there is no need to consider booking each individual element separately, given the sheer number of top quality package deals, which will come included with your skiing, accommodation, flights and lift pass.  You might even be lucky enough to find a deal that includes some exotic French food to fill you up after a hard day on the slopes! 

Alternatively, you could just pop in to your local travel agents to see what they have on offer.  Although the travel agent will usually inflate the price to cover their commission, you can still find some real bargains that aren’t available elsewhere.  And what’s more, the travel agent can recommend where to go and what to see, and there is nothing quite like that personal recommendation.  Additionally, he can help allay any fears or worries you may have about your holiday, and can answer any questions you might have.  Again, it is important to shop around for the best deal, and this will also help you get a better idea of what your chosen resort is like as a whole.

Before leaving for France it is important to make sure you have a valid passport, with over six months before expiry.  This will be absolutely critical for passing through French customs.  If you need a new passport, you should allow around eight to ten weeks before leaving, given the lengthy application process.  Make sure you plan well in advance - the passport is vital if you’re to set foot out of the country.  Without it, you won’t get to experience the magic of French skiing, and additionally, you will lose the money you paid for your holiday, so this really is a vital consideration.

Clear blue sky, crispy crystal snow, fresh air and lots of fun, all these make skiing a highly enjoyable and appreciated sport, that attracts thousands of tourists on the mountain slopes every year. Yet, some of them are looking not just for fun, but for adventure.  These are the people who choose off-piste skiing, who challenge the mountain in a race full of adrenaline, running the risk of provoking an avalanche for the sake of enjoying a descent on an untouched slope.  These are the risk takers that throw caution to the wind in favour of a good time, and many of them choose the infamous La Grave skiing area, situated in the Alps.

If you want to go skiing in La Grave, you’d better think twice for the sake of your own safety and wellbeing.  You could be there all alone, with nothing but your skies and backpack, in the middle of a white ocean, and your life depends on all your skiing knowledge and experience, which in some cases, can be less than you think. The highest risk to produce an avalanche is when there are several layers of snow, some older than the others, with different levels of density. In such a case, if you change direction suddenly, you may cut the most recent layer of snow with your skis, and thus dislocate it. Consequently, never cross a slope from one side to the other, because you may dislocate disaster. Or when skiing at high speed on slopes with fresh snow, you can raise a powder snow avalanche that makes air unbreathable because of the fine snow crystals that fill the atmosphere. Sometimes a few simple precautions like these can save your life.

In order to feel safer on your off-piste skiing expedition, there are a few things that you need to know. Always check on the snow conditions beforehand. Go online, and make sure you look at a report for La Grave, which should be easy enough to find. Has it recently snowed? What is the risk of avalanche in the area? What was the local weather like in the last days? Get information on how warm the weather can get at noon for instance. Make sure there haven’t been strong winds that might have affected the snow stability on the slope where you want to go skiing. Open your eyes for cornices and cracks and listen to possible sounds of the snow mass whilst your out there.  If you remain alert, you’ll stand a better chance of avoiding disaster.

Avoid noise in areas with high avalanche risk. When trying to communicate with other members of your group, never shout if you’re far from them, because sound vibrations can cause inner breaks in the snow mass if already unstable. Make sure your transceivers are fully charged so that you may ask for help if in need. And last, but not least, wear colourful skiing clothes, avoid white, silver or gray equipment, that make you almost invisible by lack of contrast.  Reds, or Oranges are probably the best colours to opt for, to give that contrast that could be life saving. Thus you’ll be more easily detectable on the slope, and in case you’re in an emergency situation, rescue teams can find you more quickly. You’ll be a speck of colour in the silver vastness of snow, identifiable from miles away to aid your rescue, and potentially save your life.
