Ideal Spots for a Perfect Ski Holiday

Filed Under skiing | Comments Off

Darlene Berkel asked:

Old Man Winter is here! Ski-lovers and would-be ski enthusiasts long for this time of year to arrive so that they can plan and enjoy the ski holiday of their dreams. If this is your first ski holiday, get ready for the time of your life.

Skiing is getting more and more popular each year. It is a time honored tradition for many people around the world. Anyone can enjoy ski holidays, even if you have never been on the slopes before. Whether you are a single traveler, or traveling with the entire family, you will have fun racing down the slopes.

Switzerland: Where You Can Enjoy The Ski Holiday Of A Lifetime

Switzerland is one of the most popular places for travelers from around the world. Curling up in front of a warm fire in one of many cozy ski lodges, is a welcome treat after a long day of skiing down the magnificent Alps. And to top it all off, your ski holiday would be incomplete without a fabulous cup of Switzerland’s famous hot Chocolate.

Consider Spending Your Ski Holidays In Japan

In case you did not know it, Japan is quickly becoming one of the world’s most popular ski vacation destinations, and with good reason. Japan can be proud of its slopes which rival those of the very popular Swiss Alps. And as for Japanese hospitality, it simple cannot be beat. We wholeheartedly recommend Japan to anyone who is planning on taking a ski holiday this, or any, year for that matter. Imagine spending your days on the slopes of semi-private resorts; and your evenings staying warm in private apartments filled with the scent of fresh snow. That’s exactly what awaits in Japan.

Colorado Offers Popular Ski Holidays Closer to Home

Colorado is by far one of the most popular ski holidays places in the United States. It provides lots of wonderful ski resorts which are located in the majestic Rocky Mountains. Colorado has a lot to offer. It provides endless inspirations to both beginners and advanced skiers alike. Every day there is a layer of fresh powder to enjoy.

Regardless of where you choose to go on your ski holiday, if you plan and prepare well, you are bound to be in for a treat. Being prepared means that you should take plenty of warm clothing to keep you warm while on the slopes.

A Ski Holiday Is Family Time Well Spent

There are few better ways to spend valuable time with your family during the winter than enjoying a family ski holiday. Most ski resorts offer something for everyone. From lessons for children as young as three years old; to lessons for adults who have never skied before. Within no time, you feel “at home” on the slopes, and be making memories that will last a lifetime.

Do you enjoy the winter? Then a ski holiday is a wonderful treat you. If you have fresh air, and you are surrounded by friendly faces in a comfortable ski resort, the only question left to ask is: what are you waiting for?

Red River Ski Vacations

Filed Under skiing | Comments Off

Jasmine Stone asked:

Red River, New Mexico is home to one of the most popular ski resorts in the United States, and has been for many decades. The resort offers six chair lifts and one surface lift, and the trails are equally divided for beginners, intermediates, and experts.

Top elevation at Red River is 10354 feet, and the vertical drop down the face of the mountain is 1601 feet. Unfortunately, it doesn’t snow much, and about 85% of the powder is man made. There are 58 trails scattered over 247 acres. Red River is called the ’ski town of the Southwest.’

The resort has three restaurants, all of which offer fabulous fare. Lodging can be obtained in cabins, chalets, inns, or private condominiums in the area, and many lodging packages, as well as ski packages are available through Red River Central Reservations. Red River also offers snow pass rates which allow children to ski for free, and teens to ski at reduced rates. This is a great way to save money on your family ski vacation.

Red River also has a ski school, and group lessons and private lessons are available. Even if you’ve never skied before, you will quickly be on the slopes after your lessons. There are even lessons for snowboarders, who are welcome on the Red River slopes. You can also rent all of your ski and snowboarding equipment for very reasonable rates.

The nightlife in Red River is also great. After a day on the slopes, you can kick back and relax at the lodge, or visit one of the taverns in the area. For the younger crowd, there is a great game room located right in the center of the town. One of the great things about Red River is that everything is within walking distance of the lodging areas, and shuttles are provided for transportation to and from the slopes.

You can also enjoy taking scenic chairlift rides, hiking, biking, horseback riding, camping, snow-mobiling, and hunting. You can even take one of the jeep tours to go see the abandoned gold mines in the area. So, even if you don’t ski, there is still plenty of fun to be had at Red River Ski Resort.

Childcare is available while you spend your day on the slopes. Your child will be well tended at the Li’l Buckaroos Child Care Facility, and the center provides lunch for your child as well. At Red River, everything has been thought of and taken care of to ensure that your ski vacation is as enjoyable as possible.

Reviewing The Canadian Ski Resorts

Filed Under skiing | Comments Off

MIKE SELVON asked:

Canada is a beautiful country that also happens to be the host to numerous top ski destinations. Many of these resorts are easy to access and are only an hour or two driving distance from major airports.

Most of the top Canadian ski resorts also have some wonderful features which makes them a strong draw for a diverse range of skiers. Some of these features include renowned powder, various types of terrain, great verticals, stunning scenery, modern lifts and much more.

Most of the Canadian resorts enjoy a long ski season that starts in early November and extends through to June. However, the skiing resorts which are located in Whistler, British Columbia (just north of Vancouver, BC), have seen even longer seasons.

In the Whistler area, it is common for people to still be able to ski throughout the summer months. In addition, several of the top ones also utilize snow making equipment to ensure that mountain activities are available year-round.

The Fernie Alpine Resort promises to be one of the real up-and-coming Canadian ski resorts of the near future. While not widely known at this time, with each season their reputation grows and Fernie becomes more popular. Located in the gorgeous Kootenay Rockies, the resort is conveniently located and is only a three hour car ride away from Calgary, Alberta.

The Fernie Alpine Resort is known for the amazing powder snow that it boasts and because it is still unknown as one of the best Canadian ski resorts, you will rarely encounter crowded conditions on the slopes. This top one usually receives about 29 feet of snow per season, so even toward the end of the season there is plenty of white powder.

Fernie does offer some challenging blue and green runs to keep the experienced skier stimulated. There are also many skiing opportunities for beginners among the 107 designated trails at this resort.

Fernie Alpine Resort also offers what many of the other Canadian resorts do not; the ability to ski-in and ski-out of your accommodations. For many aficionados, the chance to go straight from the slopes to your door is the perfect scenario and a delightful benefit that helps to make this a perfect choice for a winter vacation. In addition to the ski-in convenience, Fernie is also family friendly with a childcare center that features this great sport schools for the little ones.

Another Canadian skiing destination worth checking out is the Big White Ski Resort, which is located in the Okanagan area of British Columbia. Big White is Canada’s largest resort that has been designed as a ski-in/ski-out winter retreat. Similar to the Fernie area, Big White is well-known for the “champagne powder” snow that it receives and for the unparalleled mountain top views of the pine tree packed valleys and slopes of the area.

Big White has the honor of being the highest situated winter village of all the Canadian lodges of this sport and receives over 25 feet of snow on an average basis. Big White Ski Resort also has an extensive Kid’s Center, which they claim is the ultimate playground for children. Ski Canada magazine recently rated this top one as the “Best Resort for Kids.”

The Sun Peaks and the Silver Star Ski Resort are two other top Canadian ski resorts that also need to be mentioned. They boast ski runs for various levels of experience and skill, both are easy to access and both also have a nice array of other activities for those who do not ski. In addition, all of these top ones in Canada offer an excellent value, especially because of the great exchange rates.

L.A.Need asked:

Telemark skiing definitely a physically demanding sport as its best described as doing squats as you ski, downhill. As K2 is quoted saying ‘if it were easy, it would be called snowboarding’.

Telemark skiing remains a minority sport, despite the improvement in equipment and ultimately in where the telemark ski can take you. The telemark ski turn originated in a region in Sweden, called the Telemark region, in the late 1800’s. In the early 1900’s north Americans adapted the sport modifying Nordic skiing on slopes.

In the 1980’s telemark skis looked similar to alpine skis, yet used a soft leather boot, similar to a Nordic ski. Boots were originally made with three pin holes at the bottom of the front of the boot which would secure into pin bindings. This is why telemark skiers are often referred to as “pinheads”. Now, cable bindings allow the boot to slide in (without the pins) while restraining the boot with a cable suspension system. This allows for more control with the telemark ski turns.

The early 1990’s marked the beginning of the firmer, stiffer boot still offering flexibility demanded by the telemark turn. Some telemarkers are still using the soft leather boot, but the most commonly sought after boot is made of polymer, creating a stiff boot with flexibility built in the forefoot of the boot.

Telemark skis are lighter and more flexible than alpine skis, yet similar in their width. Most ski manufacturers are creating their own selection of Telemark skis since the physical demands of Telemark skiing differs greatly from alpine skiing.

Access is not limited to the ski slopes with telemark skis. Telemark skiing is also your passport to the backcountry. With skins on your telemark skis, you can climb into the alpine, remove your skins and ski down on untouched powder. Be sure to gear up in insulated thermal underwear, proper outerwear and carry survival gear.

With great form and telemark skis there are no limits in snow country. Free your heal. Free your Mind
