Was planning a trip, but don’t want to shell out the cash if most of the mountain (most importantly, the back bowls) isn’t open at that time.

I would say that skiing in Vail, Colorado is going to be good in December. I reckon there will be tons and tons of beautiful snow out there, so it is perfect for both skiing and snowboarding.

Should be good. Opening of the bowls will, of course, depend on the snow. Vail Resorts often keeps some of the terrain closed until some of the Christmas traffic come in.

Vail shouldn’t be completely open, but since it’s huge there will be PLENTY of skiing/boarding to be done. Watch out for new years/x-mas week cuz it’ll be toursist central.
